We’ve put together an essential guide to home plumbing problems:
- Clogged drains and toilets – In sinks and tubs, hair is often to blame for clogs. Sometimes a shampoo cap or other small object enters the drain. For toilets, flushing anything but dissolvable waste can cause blockages. Be aware that plungers can help to remove clogs. However, they can also push restrictions deeper. Chemical drain cleaners can cause damage to pipes. Plumbing snakes are a better option.
- Leaky faucets and pipes – A faucet that drips once per second wastes over 3,000 gallons of water per year. The cause is usually the washer that forms the seal on the tap tearing, stiffening, or dislodging. Replacing the washer is quite simple. Leaking pipes can lead to major structural damage. If you suspect a leak, the experienced plumbers from Ray & Son Heating & Air Conditioning are here to help.
- Water heater issues – No hot water, discolored water, and strange noises produced by the water heater most often require professional service. Mineral deposits can reduce the efficiency and supply of hot water. Sediment might be the reason for the odd sounds. Maintain the water heater by checking the pressure valve, periodically flushing the tank, and watching for leaks or drips.
- Low water pressure – A leaking pipe can be the reason behind a lack of water pressure. Turn off all taps, check the water meter and wait a couple of hours without using water. If the water meter changes, there’s a leak. A buildup of sediment and mineral deposits in the pipes, showerheads, or faucet aerators can also be to blame. We suggest soaking aerators and showerheads in vinegar.
- Running toilets – The inner workings of the toilet are no longer operating properly. Sometimes the flapper valve no longer fits snugly and lets water run. An imbalance float, leak, or loose fill tube might also be to blame. Check for leaks by placing a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Wait 20 to 30 minutes. If the color has seeped into the bowl, it’s due to a leak.
